Last year I gave a lecture entitled Text as Art / Art as Text at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, Birmingham. Excitingly, I have been asked to return to give another called The Who, What and Where of Contemporary Art on 26th February 2014, 1.10pm, FREE.

More details to follow but in the meantime, you can see information below on the previous discussion:

Text as Art / Art as Text

Words feature in many artists’ works. Independent curator and writer Anneka French will explore the possibilities and uses of text within contemporary visual art. Focusing on significant British and international practitioners, Anneka will address how artists appropriate the form and meaning of the written or spoken word, exploring the notion of text as art, and looking at how text can play a role in augmenting meaning within art. The session will additionally investigate how visual art might be ‘read’ as text by looking at the work of Martin Creed, Heather Cassils, Laure Prouvost, Cy Twombly, Mark Rothko and others.
